Senator Kean’s Iran Divestiture Legislation Clears First Legislative Hurdle

Building on his long-standing advocacy against state investment in nations with poor records on human rights and terrorism, Senator Tom Kean, Jr. has submitted legislation to ensure New Jersey tax dollars are denied to businesses conducting activity in Iran.

The bill, S-1304, which cleared the Senate State Government, Wagering, Tourism, and Historic Preservation Committee today, would deny state and local public contracts to any person or entity that invest in Iran’s energy or finance sectors.

Legislation that would mandate a sentence of 25 year to life in prison for the aggravated sexual assault of a child under 13 years of age has passed the Senate Law and Public Safety Committee.

The bill, dubbed the “Jessica Lunsford Act” in memory of the Florida nine-year-old who was raped and murdered in 2005 by a previously convicted sex offender, is sponsored by Senators Diane Allen, Tom Kean, Jr., and Steve Oroho.

Bill Applies Pay to Play Restrictions to Previously Omitted Recipients of Large Public Contracts

Declaring that ethics reform is only effective if it treats all parties equally, Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean, Jr. (R- Union) has submitted legislation today that would close the most substantial loophole in New Jersey’s anti-pay to play law.

The bill would apply the same restrictions on campaign contributions and activity that currently exist for other government service providers to labor unions under contract, including project-labor agreements, with state, county, or municipal government entities.
