Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean, Jr. (R- Union) issued the following statement in reaction to Governor Christie’s nomination of Phillip Kwon and Bruce Harris to the New Jersey Supreme Court:

“Governor Christie has picked two nominees with impeccable legal credentials to serve on our state’s highest court. Mr. Kwon has helped lead the fight on public corruption in New Jersey in the offices of the Attorney General and U.S. Attorney. Mr. Harris, a constituent with whom I had the pleasure of campaigning this past fall, comes from two of New Jersey’s most prestigious and influential law firms. The most important qualification for a nominee to the Supreme Court is his or her skill and knowledge as an attorney. The Governor has found in Phillip Kwon and Bruce Harris two extraordinarily qualified members of the Bar to serve the people of this state.”

Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean, Jr. (R- Union) issued this statement following Governor Christie’s 2012 State of the State Address:

“In government, we should do what is proven to work and learn from what has failed.

“New Jerseyans are more optimistic about the future of our state and her economy today than they have been in years because legislative Republicans and Governor Christie have taken our state in a different direction.

“What we’ve been doing is working, despite the doomsday, class warfare predictions of those who were happy to continue spending money we didn’t have and raising taxes to pay for it.

Legislation arising from the Caylee Anthony tragedy in Florida has been signed into law by Governor Christie.

The measure, “Caylee’s Law”, was sponsored in the state Senate by Tom Kean, Jr. (R- Union) and Diane Allen (R- Burlington). The law upgrades to a crime of the fourth degree failure to report the death of a person while creating a new crime, also of the fourth degree, of failing to report the disappearance of a child within 24 hours.

Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean, Jr. (R- Union) issued the following statement mourning the death of his friend and colleague, Assembly Republican Leader Alex DeCroce:

The New Jersey Legislature lost one of its own today, and with him, a great leader and public servant.

Assemblyman Alex DeCroce passed away while serving the people of New Jersey shortly after adjournment of the 2010-2011 legislative session.

Alex was a true leader for the Republican caucus in the Assembly, and was loved and respected by legislators of both chambers, on both sides of the aisle.  He worked tirelessly for his constituents, for our party, and to make sure this institution never lost sight of who it was supposed to serve- the people of New Jersey.

New Jersey Is Number 1…In Chasing Residents Away

With United Van Line’s annual study of state by state population shifts showing New Jersey tied with Illinois for the highest proportion of residents migrating out of state, Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean, Jr. today suggested a strong correlation between New Jersey’s increased tax burden over the last decade and the loss of population to other states.

“I agree with the Senate President that the high cost of living in New Jersey is the driving force behind so many people leaving the state,” said Kean (R- Union). “So it defies logic that the $8 billion in higher taxes imposed upon the people of this state by an unchecked Democratic legislature have had no impact on that cost of living.”

Reminder That Democrats Have Yet to End an Indefensible Perk Costing Taxpayers Millions

New Jersey taxpayers can now view the cost to their individual communities of accumulated unused sick leave by public workers on the Senate Republicans’ website. The “Sick Leave Reform Calculator” demonstrates the financial liabilities incurred by local governments to date as a result of a special perk that has yet to be banned by lawmakers.

With no action scheduled by the Majority on legislation ending these payments prior to the close of the current legislative session, Trenton Democrats have all but ensured that an indefensible practice yielding no public benefit will continue for the foreseeable future.

Legislation sponsored by Senators Tom Kean, Jr. (R- Union) and Diane Allen (R- Burlington) upgrading penalties for failing to report the disappearance or death of a child passed both houses of the legislature today and heads to Governor Christie’s desk.

If signed, “Caylee’s Law” the bill upgrades the charge for failing to report the death of a person to the proper authorities. It would now be a fourth degree crime. A new crime of failing to report the disappearance of a child within 24 hours is also created under the legislation, carrying fourth degree penalties as well.

Republican Leaders Decry Wasted Opportunity in Lame Duck

With both the Senate and Assembly in session today and time rapidly running out on the current legislative year, Democratic leaders in Trenton have planned dozens of votes on bills of very little substance for taxpayers, said Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean, Jr. and Assembly Republican Leader Alex DeCroce.

Both chambers’ agendas have excluded consideration of substantive, unfinished reforms dealing with excessive terminal leave payments, the state’s antiquated civil service system, or capping state spending in order to build a better and more predictable business climate.

Dubbing today’s proceedings the ‘Seinfeld Session’- a legislative voting session about nothing of much consequence to taxpayers- Kean and DeCroce released the following statements decrying an opportunity wasted:
