Kean/Allen Sponsored “Caylee’s Law” Clears Committee

Legislation sponsored by Senators Tom Kean, Jr. (R- Union) and Diane Allen (R- Burlington) upgrading penalties for failing to report the disappearance or death of a child has cleared the Senate Law and Public Safety Committee.

Known as “Caylee’s Law”, the bill increases the penalty to a crime of the fourth degree for failing to report the death of a person to the proper authorities. A new crime of failing to report the disappearance of a child within 24 hours is also created under the legislation, carrying fourth degree penalties as well.

The Senate Republican Caucus today met to elect its leadership team for the 2012-2013 legislative session. Senator Tom Kean, Jr. (R- 21), will serve as Republican Leader, with Senator Diane Allen (R- 7) serving as Deputy Republican Leader.

Rounding out the caucus’s leadership team is Senator Kevin O’Toole (R- 40), Republican Whip, Senator Robert Singer (R- 30), Conference Chairman, Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R- 16), Deputy Conference Chairman, and Senator Anthony Bucco (R- 25), the caucus’s Budget Officer. All leaders were elected unanimously.

Failure to Allow Vote on Transitional Aid Bill Likely to Lead to Downgrade by Moody’s

Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean (R-21) said that by stalling on a transitional aid bill that would provide a much needed financial lifeline to several struggling New Jersey cities, legislative Democrats have increased the likelihood that credit rating downgrades will be issued for those cities making future borrowing more expensive.

“The failure of Democrats to move forward on approving a transitional aid bill that is waiting to be voted on will hurt the residents of New Jersey’s cities both now and in the future,” said Kean. “This aid would help our cities to fund critical services including police and fire departments in their current budgets, and would prevent likely credit downgrades that would make future budgets even more expensive for taxpayers.”

President’s Proposal Would Authorize Private Debt Collectors to Call Cell Phones of People Delinquent on Debts Owed to the Federal Government

Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean released the following statement regarding a formal proposal, submitted by President Obama, that would authorize private debt collectors to call the cell phones of people delinquent on student loans and other debts owed the Federal Government. Debt collectors may currently make “robo” calls to landlines but not to cell phones:
