Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean issued the following statement today following the Senate President’s announcement that the Legislature will spend the next several months seeking to implement a series of economic measures that will help jumpstart the state’s sagging economy:

“Republicans continue to be willing and ready to work at a moment’s notice on any legislation that creates permanent, private sector jobs in the state. We must reignite our state’s competitive advantage and attract businesses and create jobs. Unemployed workers deserve a government that works across party lines to consider every responsible proposal to improve our economy and get residents working again.”

July Tax Collections Come in as Governor Projected

Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean, Jr. (R- Union) today issued the following statement regarding state revenue collections for the month of July:

“The Treasury Department has released actual tax collections for the month of July, and the numbers confirm what Republicans said in June: that the Governor’s revenue certification was fiscally sound. While one month does not a trend make, it is heartening that the governor balanced the Democrats’ budget by veto. Had their revenue estimates been allowed to stand in this years budget, we would be in trouble if this month’s revenue tracking holds throughout the year.”

Tom Kean: “Green Acres Legislation Funding Local Preservation Projects Signed by Governor Christie”

Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean, Jr. (R- Union), co-prime sponsor of S-2858, appropriating nearly $15 million for environmental conservation projects, said that local recreation and open space preservation projects will benefit from Governor Christie’s approval of his legislation. Kean’s legislation, along with two “Green Acres” bills, were signed by the Governor this morning.

“New Jersey, and particularly Northern New Jersey, is the most densely populated place in America,” said Senator Kean. “I want to thank the Governor for signing my legislation, as well as two other bills that will help municipalities and non-profit groups acquire and preserve green space for recreational and conservation purposes. Preserving what little open space we have left for public enjoyment is uniquely important to the quality of life in our communities. Our children should be able to look out the window or walk down the street to see trees and fields, not just more housing developments or shopping centers.”

Tom Kean: “Money Without Innovation, Accountability Fails New Jersey School Children”

Lauding the Christie Administration’s announcement that the state will expand its partnership with Harlem Children’s Zone to include other struggling school districts, Senate Republican Leader and Education Committee member Tom Kean, Jr. (R- Union) called on Senate leadership to allow debate and votes on legislation aimed at increasing accountability and innovation in New Jersey public schools.

“Proper funding of education for every school district in New Jersey is important, but funding alone doesn’t get results for our children,” said Kean. “If money alone were the answer, New Jersey’s inner cities would have the highest graduation rates, test scores, and educational outcomes of any district in America because they spend more per student than almost anywhere in the nation. Innovation and accountability, currently lacking in our public school system, is key to making every dollar we spend on education work better for students in every school district, regardless of economic status.”

Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean (R- Union) announced there is a school aid calculator (https://www.senatenj.com/school-aid) on the Senate Republican website to help parents, teachers and administrators learn how much additional funding their school district is receiving for the 2011-2012 school year.

This year, Senate Republicans worked with Governor Christie to increase state aid to all school districts. The budget, signed by Governor Christie and sustained by Senate Republicans, increases overall aid to schools by $850 million, including $318 million for suburban and rural districts.

Establishes Penalties for Failing to Report, Concealing Death or Disappearance of Children

Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean, Jr. (R- Westfield) has submitted legislation that establishes criminal penalties for failing to report the death or disappearance of a child. The bill is named for Florida toddler Caylee Anthony, whose disappearance and death went unreported for nearly a month.

“It is actually with a bit of reluctance that I submit this legislation, as government really should not have to legislate where common sense should prevail,” said Kean. “But common sense dictates that a parent or guardian who does not to report the disappearance or death of a child in their care should be considered criminally negligent.”

Kean, Munoz & Bramnick Laud Governor for Increasing School Aid in FY 2012 Budget

Senator Tom Kean, Jr., Assemblyman Jon Bramnick, and Assemblywoman Nancy Munoz are pleased to announce that local school districts will receive increased school aid for the 2011-2012 school year.

The 21st District legislators worked closely with the Christie Administration in an effort to gain a fairer share of school aid dollars in the final state budget signed by the Governor.

School children and property taxpayers are the primary beneficiaries of the Governors decision to dedicate additional state revenue to school aid for suburban communities, said Senator Kean. By making tough choices and using an unexpected bump in state revenues wisely, we were able not only to increase aid over last year, but to double the rate of increase that was originally proposed in March.

“It’s beginning to feel a bit like Groundhog Day in Trenton, with another set of politically motivated override votes scheduled by the Majority.
